Weaving the web

from 1984 to 1985

The time to weave the web has a historic milestone: the II National Meeting of Indigenous Peoples, organized by the Union of Indigenous Nations. In 1984, this gathering brought together around 400 leaders from 48 Indigenous peoples in Brasília, in a powerful demonstration of their ability to organize and strategies in the fight for land and self-determination.

At this meeting, UNI’s set up regional centers in various states, seeking to meet the diverse demands of each region. And UNI’s Publications Coordination, led by Ailton Krenak from the São Paulo office. As the first activities of this Coordination, in 1984 two issues of the printed Jornal Indígena (Indigenous Newspaper) were published, which had a total of six editions and was distributed free of charge to the villages, the press and the urban public.

Between 1984 and 1985 there were numerous meetings, indigenous assemblies in the villages, documentaries with partners in the struggle, public events, mobilization of civil society and the press around invasions of indigenous areas.

The Núcleo de Cultura Indígena began to take shape at this time with a focus on activities and projects to defend rights and communicate with Brazilian society, informing, creating proximity and alliances.
